EARTH, WIND AND FIRE for Percussion Orchestra (2006)
II. Scorrevole, attacca
(excerpt)
I was extremely surprised when I received a phone call in the morning from Anthony J. Cirone, Chair of the Percussion Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Tony expressed that he admires my STRING TRIO NO.1 and wanted to transcribe it to percussion orchestra. He was passionate about this project because he can visualize colorful vivid images in my music.
Tony Cirone has been a principal percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony for 36 years. He has performed under many distinguished conductors and composers including Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Herbert Blomstedt, Eugene Ormandy, Kurt Mazur, James Levine, Michael Tilson Thomas, Aaron Copland and Igor Stravinsky. Tony has transcribed numerous music to percussion ensemble including Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, Adagietto by Gustav Mahler and Bachianas Brasilerias No. 4 by Heitor Villa Lobos. EARTH, WIND AND FIRE is Tony’s own transcription and his own title. I am deeply honored and humbled by his beautiful work.
EARTH, WIND AND FIRE was premiered by the IU Jacobs School of Music Percussion Orchestra, conducted by Tony Cirone on Sunday, November 5, 2006.
