SILHOUETTE for Orchestra (1998)
(excerpt #2)
SILHOUETTE is vivid and majestic, yet it also portrays tenderness and most importantly, passion. SILHOUETTE is constructed from my own chromatic hexachords. Each element (e.g., pitch material, melody, and harmony) and the overall structure are derived from the hexachords that involve the minor third and tritone relationships. For me, the descending minor third expresses love; and the tritone, which consists of two minor thirds, expresses tragedy. Silhouette is intensely personal and I hope it speaks for itself.
SILHOUETTE was finished on March 29, 1998 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and it is dedicated to Bright Sheng, recipient of the 2001 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Award". SILHOUETTE received the 1998 Haddonfield Symphony Young Composers’ Competition and it was premiered by Haddonfield Symphony under maestro Daniel Hege. SILHOUETTE is published by Theodore Presser Company.
"... starts with a staccato outburst and then unfolds in a series of short episodes filled with pounding rhythms, bold colors and dissonant effects."
